Emergency Navigation for Hazard

SafeMap: an Emergency Navigation Application for Routing in crisis conditions by Ant Colony Algorithm (Paper Summited to CHI 2023)

The routing for locating a safe zone after natural disasters is the most critical activity in controlling numerous disasters. Numerous lives are in danger during natural disasters and political conflicts if citizens are unable to reach shelters or hospitals in a safe and timely manner. Using regular navigation applications, such as Google Map, may put civilians’ lives in great danger because of the route blocks and aftershock. Thus, our Modified Ant-Colony optimization (MACO) Algorithm was built based on Siegen Germany to locate safe and short routes to the safe space. The MACO algorithm modifies the pheromone matrix to determine the routes based on the city infrastructures and can identify safe routes quickly. Moreover, we used the pluralistic usability walkthrough method to iterate the SafeMap prototype’s interpretability, trust, and usability with 20 various participants, such as older adults with mobility deficiency, earthquake survivors, a firefighter and HCI students. We anticipate our research can provide insight into developing navigation applications to save lives when hazards happen.
